Skills for Applying AI-Based Methods and Tools in Requirements Engineering — Fundamentals, Opportunities, and Risks — v1/2026

.
Motivation for the Topic

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is currently a ubiquitous topic in nearly all areas of life and appears to be evolving into a “cultural technique.”

In particular, there are numerous applications of AI in requirements engineering (RE) that can positively impact RE productivity and quality.

HOWEVER: Using AI in RE without a solid understanding of the fundamentals of RE carries the risk of being unable to evaluate the AI’s results.

Using AI requires the ability to ask the right questions—also known as “prompt engineering.”

.
In this seminar, you will learn

the key characteristics of AI methods:

  • What a requirements engineer should know about AI and the underlying language models
  • How can a requirements engineer correctly formulate the right questions as “prompts” for AI systems?
  • What legal and technical constraints should a requirements engineer consider when using AI
  • What tools can be used to apply AI in requirements engineering
  • How can AI-generated results be reviewed and validated?
  • What remains the responsibility of the requirements engineer despite the use of AI
  • What progress on productivity we can expect (realistically) by using AI in Requirement Engineering

.
Objective of the Seminar

The seminar is designed to impart the knowledge and skills required for the successful use of AI methods and tools.

.
Seminar Content (Excerpt)

Coverage of all key elements of the seminar

  • Expectations for AI Implementation in RE
  • Prerequisites for the successful use of AI in RE
  • Fundamentals and definitions
  • Prompt engineering
  • Role-Task Format Examples
  • Interaction Patterns (Zero-Shot, Few-Shot, Chain-of-Thought, Prompt-Chaining etc.)
  • Areas of Application for AI in RE (domain description, system-context analysis, requirements elicitation, stakeholder management, planning of requirements analysis, requirements documentation, requirements validation, requirements management)
  • Application Examples Using Common Tools
  • Critical Reflection (technical, legal, economic, political)

.
Methodology

Lecture and discussion featuring case studies from industry practice, along with participant exercises, with a particular focus on the methodological knowledge of RE required for the use of RE-based tools.

.
Prerequisites

Project experience in systems development in at least one of the following roles: Requirements Engineer, Software Architect, Product Owner, or Developer.

.
Target Audience

Requirements Analysts, Requirements Engineers, Developers, Testers

.
From the idea (formulating the problem) through a generated problem description to AI-generated use cases, use case descriptions, and use case diagrams.
It all comes down to asking the right questions the right way! (Prompt Engineering)
But BEWARE: The responsibility lies with the requirements engineer
